The Rule of 72 vs The Rule of 108
Many are familiar with the Rule of 72.  If you take the interest rate you are getting on your money and divide it into 72, the result is an approximation of the number of years it takes your money to double.  For example, if you have a lump sum of $10,000 earning a yearly rate of 3%, it would take around 24 years to grow to $20,000.  However, taxes are assumed to be deferred until the money is withdrawn.

The rule of 108 will estimate the numbers of years it will take your money to double in a taxed account, assuming a 33% tax rate.  If you have that same lump sum of $10,000 earning a yearly rate of 3%, it will now take around 36 years to double to $20,000.
